We have two exciting athletics announcements for our Eagles family. The first is regarding promising changes to our basketball program. We are thrilled to announce that Coach Greg Matta has accepted the position of Director of Basketball Operations at NCCS. This position will include serving as the head coach for both varsity boys and varsity girls basketball teams, as well as overseeing all basketball teams at NCCS.

A WINNING RECORD

Coach Matta has a long history of basketball success at NCCS, including serving as head coach for the NCCS Varsity Boys Basketball program for 12 seasons. During this time, he accumulated a record of 304 wins and 58 losses, appearing in one Sweet Sixteen, eight Elite 8s, one Final 4, two State Championships, and one Division I National Championship.

Coach Matta spent this past year as the head coach for our varsity girls basketball team, where he had the best start in NCCS history for varsity girls at 9-0. He coached freshman standout Brooke Moore, who received first team All-Region and Atlanta Journal Constitution Honorable Mention All-State.

Of his new role as Director of Basketball Operations, Matta says, “I am more than excited, but also honored to be able to coach both programs here at NCCS. NCCS has been my family, my friends, and my life for almost 15 years. Both my children graduated from NCCS (Sarah in 2008 and Michael in 2011), and my grandson Tyson will begin his sixth year at NCCS this fall. I can’t express my feelings regarding this opportunity. All I can say is, what a ‘coach’s DREAM’ to be able to coach two varsity games in one night!”

ASSOCIATE BASKETBALL COACH ANNOUNCED

As any head coach will tell you, a coach is only as good as the support framework around him. In this light, Coach Matta is excited to announce that longtime JV Head Coach Michael Matta will take an additional role as associate varsity head coach.

“Michael has a NCCS JV record of 74-11 and a NCCS Varsity record of 3-0. As a player at NCCS, Michael played on our Division I National Championship team, two State Championship Teams, and an Elite 8 Team. While at NCCS, he has accumulated a record of 132 wins and 17 losses,” says Matta. Michael was also All-Region Player of the Year, 1st Team All-Cobb County, and Class A All-State (North) Player of the Year. He has been a long-standing pillar to our coaching staff at NCCS and will remain our JV head coach, in addition to his new role with our varsity boys.

NEW SOFTBALL HEAD COACH

Following the resignation of Varsity Softball Head Coach Emily Wright due to the upcoming arrival of her baby, we are pleased to announce that Coach Cortney Stewart will be taking over as Head Varsity Softball Coach.

Coach Stewart played softball for a total of 16 years in multiple positions, primarily as a middle infielder and also at 1st base and center field. Coach Stewart has coaching experience in softball, as well as coaching at NCCS with the girls basketball program. She will be assisted by longtime Varsity Softball Assistant Coach Nate Rupp. We are very excited to have Coach Stewart take over the softball program at NCCS. And, our warmest congrats to Emily Wright and her husband Nick (class of ‘09) on the upcoming arrival of their baby! Mrs. Wright will thankfully be returning as our beloved Middle School Math department head in the fall.

We look forward to exciting times ahead for these two sports at NCCS. Go Eagles!
